Free-Writing

With Free-writing, you have your students write continuously for a certain period of time without consideration to spelling, grammar, or topic.

Some writers use the technique to collect initial thoughts and ideas on a certain topic, frequently as a preliminary draft to more formal writing.

A free-write implies that students are “free” to write whatever they want, but often you must guide the free-write with a prompt.

MIT outlines the process here: https://writingprocess.mit.edu/process/step-1-generate-ideas/instructions/freewriting
